Family Practice - Community Medicine
During the second and third years of training, residents will work with various health departments, providing multiple services to the community. This includes coordinating health fairs and immunization clinics, providing screening services, and giving health-related presentations to community groups. Residents become involved in our active school-based program giving lectures and education to students from third grade to high school. Educational topics provided to the school include bicycle helmet safety, sexually transmitted diseases, hepatitis, TAR wars, and Boys to Men Girls to Women.
During the two-month rotation, residents will see patients in our two affiliated nursing homes, Montclair State University student health center, and a school for special needs children. To increase their knowledge of family functioning and child abuse, residents also rotate at the Montclair Family Guidance Center (for exposure to family treatment) and the Division of Youth and Family Services, going out on home visits to investigate suspected child abuse.
