Family Practice - Electives
To ensure that residents are having their educational needs and medical interests met, there are five elective months in the second and third years of training, including an away/protected elective. Residents have the opportunity to study in an area of interest that includes Sports Medicine, PM&R, Alternative and Complementary, Pain Management, Podiatry, Behavioral Health, Endocrinology, etc. These rotations occur in hospital-based clinics and/or community offices.
Our Away/Protected elective is a month-long rotation in the third year that allows residents to have a call-free and office-hours-free rotation. They may rotate in an area of interest either in another state, or internationally, without being burdened by other residency requirements. Rotations that residents have completed include international medicine in Argentina and the Philippines, aviation medicine, practice management, palliative care, procedures, alternative medicine, and media medicine (learning to anchor medical stories on the television news). |
