Family Practice - Intensive Care Units
First year residents spend two months on the Intensive Care Units caring for critically ill patients. Each first year resident is paired with a family practice/internal medicine senior who helps guide them and provide a supportive quality learning experience. During this rotation, residents learn to recognize and manage life-threatening situations such as respiratory failure, cardiac arrest and infectious disease emergencies. Supervised daily rounds, frequent conferences, and one-on-one teaching with internal medicine faculty and specialists ensure a well-rounded learning experience.
Second year residents spend one month rotating on the Intensive Care Units while supervising the first year family practice intern. During this rotation, residents increase their knowledge and treatment of serious medical conditions while also acting as code team leader, interpreting laboratory tests, performing procedures such as lumbar punctures and intubations, and prioritizing admission and discharges to the units. |
