Family Practice - Obstetrics
First year residents spend two months rotating on obstetrics, acquiring the knowledge and skills for the diagnosis, treatment and management of the obstetric patient. During these months residents work closely with supervising obstetricians and the Family Practice faculty, learning and managing the normal course of labor as well as obstetric emergencies. They learn to treat common intrapartum problems such as preeclampsia, nonreassuring fetal status and diabetes while acquiring skills in alternative methods of delivery (cesarean section, vacuum extraction, etc).
In the second year of training, residents complete a one-month GYN rotation with a community gynecologist. During this rotation residents learn about common gynecological problems while developing colposcopy, endometrial biopsy and IUD placement skills. |
