Family Practice - Pediatric Emergency Medicine
During their second year, residents rotate for one month in the high-volume inner city Level III pediatric emergency room at the University of Medicine and Dentistry Hospital in Newark. During this rotation, residents learn from experienced pediatric emergency specialists how to diagnose and treat a variety of pediatric illnesses and traumas. Cases seen in the PMD include head trauma, acute abdomen pain, child abuse, poisoning, burns, seizures, lacerations and fractures. Residents learn how to triage pediatric cases and how to develop an assessment and plan that takes into account the socioeconomic and emotional condition.
